Everyone is welcome

Plenty of people in the parish first walked in knowing nothing about Orthodoxy. Here is what a Sunday looks like, so you know what to expect.

  • When

    Sunday Divine Liturgy at 10:30, Vespers on Saturday at 17:00, and the Psalter read on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 18:00.

  • Where

    Providence Row, a short walk from the city centre. Parking is in the Sands car park just across the road.

  • What to expect

    The services are mostly in English, with Romanian, Greek and Slavonic woven in, and everyone is invited to the shared meal afterwards.

Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple

A Great Feast of the Mother of God, kept during the Nativity Fast: the young Virgin is brought to the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicated to God.

Our Story

The parish began in 1996 as a small mission at Durham University. Thirty years on, it is a parish of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese with a church of its own on Providence Row and a congregation drawn from across the North-East. The short film tells the story of the building.

Why is this extension vital?

Our church on Providence Row is a restored 19th-century chapel. Its historic footprint cannot accommodate the toilets and facilities that a growing congregation needs.
